HOLOCAUST VICTIMS TO BE REMEMBERED THROUGH MEMORIAL SERVICE, SPEAKERS, 24-HOUR VIGIL CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va., April 5 -- University of Virginia students will join thousands of people around the world in remembering the victims of Nazism during Yom HaShoah, Holocaust Memorial Day. The U.Va. program will begin on Monday, April 15, at 7 p.m. in Gilmer Hall Auditorium with an annual memorial service, followed by two local guest speakers, Fred Hoffman and Kathleen Phalen. Following the speakers, students will walk to the front of University Chapel and participate in a 24-hour vigil. They will take part in "Unto Every Person There is a Name," a program in which the names of the Holocaust victims are read publicly. The vigil will run from sundown April 15 to sundown April 16 and is part of a worldwide ceremony to remember victims. "'Unto Every Person There is a Name' restores some dignity to those who were stripped of their identities and robbed of their lives," said Tommy Baer, international president of B'nai B'rith, which is coordinating the program in the United States. "We remember the six million Jewish victims each year by reading as many names in as many communities as possible. Sadly, the Nazis killed so many and tried so hard to obliterate any memory, that even this effort is insufficient to recall every victim." The U.Va. program is sponsored by the Hillel Jewish Center and B'nai B'rith and is open to all who are interested.
