PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT THOMAS JEFFERSON'S BIRTHDAY WEEK EVENTS AT U.VA. INCLUDE PRESENTATION BY URBAN VISIONARY JANE JACOBS, SPECIAL WORKSHOP ON THE UNIVERSITY'S MODERN HISTORY ¥ Noted urban theorist Jane Jacobs, award-winning author of the classic book, "The Death and Life of Great American Cities," will make a public talk at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 10, in Minor Hall Auditorium as part of the University of Virginia's Founder's Day week's activities. Jacobs, a visionary who has taught urban planners to understand cities as intricate organisms, will receive the 31st annual Thomas Jefferson Memorial Foundation Medal in Architecture as part of U.Va.'s commemoration of Jefferson's 253rd birthday. ¥ An exhibit of Jacobs's personal papers, photos and other key material related to her life work, will be on display at the School of Architecture, Campbell Hall second floor, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. weekdays, April 8-26. ¥ On Friday, April 12, following a private luncheon in the Rotunda, a tree will be planted in honor of former U.Va. President Edgar F. Shannon Jr. President John T. Casteen III and other University officials will participate in the planting, scheduled for roughly 2 p.m. between Pavilions VI and VIII on the Lawn. Shannon, who served as U.Va.'s president from 1959 to 1974 and who is an English professor emeritus, will attend the event. ¥ At the Rotunda luncheon the 20th annual Thomas Jefferson Memorial Foundation Award in Law will be conferred posthumously upon Rex E. Lee, former U.S. Solicitor General and former president of Brigham Young University, who died in March. His widow, Janet Lee, will accept the award at the luncheon. The Jefferson Award in Law and the Jefferson Medal in Architecture are the highest outside honors conferred by U.Va. ¥ On Saturday, April 13, Jefferson's birthday, a special research workshop on the University's 20th history will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. A highlight of the 1995-96 academic year, which marks the centennial of the disastrous fire that gutted Jefferson's landmark Rotunda, the workshop will focus on research in progress and future directions for research on U.Va.'s 20th century history. Headquarters for workshop sessions will be in Minor Hall. The sessions are free and open to the public. To register in advance please call (804) 924-7221. ¥ Also on Saturday at 9:30 a.m. the Darden Graduate School of Business Administration will hold a processional.
