STALLARD NAMED DEAN OF CONTINUING EDUCATION CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va., April 16 -- Sondra Stallard, interim dean of the University of Virginia's Division of Continuing Education since October, will become dean effective immediately, President John T. Casteen III announced today. "Ms. Stallard has been an exceptional leader in dealing with urgent financial and organizational issues facing the division," Casteen said. "She is the right person to continue that work." A task force appointed last fall to review the mission and structure of continuing education at the University will continue, said vice president and provost Peter W. Low. Chaired by education dean David W. Breneman, the 22-member group expects to make recommendations to the provost by mid-fall, as originally scheduled. As part of that process, Breneman noted, the task force has scheduled meetings this spring with deans of continuing education at Harvard and Johns Hopkins Universities. It is studying changing enrollment patterns and markets for adult education, the increasing role of technology in long-distance learning, and, through consultation with students and faculty, assessing specific programs and services. Since 1989-90, University enrollment data show a 26 percent drop in registrations for credit courses taught at the division's seven regional centers and at the FBI Academy in Quantico. Non-credit programs have seen a similar decline. "Members of the task force have been enormously impressed with Ms. Stallard's grasp of the issues, her advocacy of the division's programs, and her clearly evident leadership skills," Breneman said. "Her appointment to head continuing education programs on an on-going basis, whether as dean or in some other role yet to be defined, will assist us in our work." Stallard, who holds a Ph.D. in education from U.Va., has served the University in a number of capacities since she was hired by the Curry School of Education in 1975 to assist newly desegregated public school systems with curriculum review and to build community relations. She served as director of equal opportunity programs from 1981 to 1986, has 10 years' experience as a fund-raiser for the engineering and graduate business schools, and was executive assistant to President Casteen at the time she was appointed interim dean. ### April 16, 1996 Television reporters should contact our TV News Office at (804) 924-7550.
