U.VA.'S OUTSTANDING TEACHERS ARE HONORED CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va., April 13 -- Fourteen University of Virginia faculty members and four graduate students have been chosen as this year's winners of annual University-wide awards honoring exceptional teaching. Chosen from among dozens of nominations supported by detailed testimonials from students and faculty, the 1995-96 award recipients will be honored Monday, April 15, in the Rotunda at the University's fifth annual "In Celebration of Teaching" banquet, hosted by President John T. Casteen III and Vice President and Provost Peter Low. "The nominees are always some of our very top faculty members and graduate-student teachers, and the Teaching Awards Committee finds it extremely difficult to choose," said professor Marva A. Barnett, director of the Teaching Resource Center, which coordinates the awards. "A great deal of thought and effort goes into these nominations. They clearly demonstrate what dedicated teaching involves, and the selection process is always exciting." The 1995-96 award winners are: ¥ K. Edward Lay, professor of architecture, and Jennings L. Wagoner, professor of education: co-winners of the Alumni Association Distinguished Professor Award. The annual award is given to a faculty member who has excelled as a teacher, shown unusual concern for students and made significant contributions to University life for at least a decade. The co-winners will split a $1,500 prize. ¥ Stephen Arata, assistant professor of English: The Alumni Board of Trustees Teaching Award. The award is given to an assistant professor for demonstrated skill in teaching and carries a $1,000 prize, with $1,500 in additional support and offers a semester's research assignment. Winners of All-University Outstanding Teaching Awards, each carrying a $2,000 prize and recognizing ability to inspire and motivate students, include: ¥ John D. Lyons, professor of French ¥ Toni Wegner, associate professor of psychology ¥ S. Joseph Poon, professor of physics ¥ Pamela S. Karlan, professor of law ¥ Dr. Michael F. Rein, professor of internal medicine Winners of All-University Outstanding Graduate Teaching Assistant Awards, each carrying a $1,000 prize for teaching excellence, are: ¥ Genevieve Brock, French ¥ Matthew Ansfield, psychology ¥ Thomas Goebeler, mathematics Winner of the Resident Teaching Award in the School of Medicine, carrying a $1,000 prize, is Dr. Lorne H. Blackbourne of the surgery department. The University Teaching Fellows Program, funded through the Office of the Provost, supports junior faculty of outstanding ability in efforts to design or redesign courses. The year-long program includes a $5,500 summer fellowship. Winners are: ¥ Robert J. Beck, assistant professor government and foreign affairs ¥ Felicia A.
