EXPERT ON YOUTH VIOLENCE TO GIVE KEYNOTE ADDRESS AT RICHMOND SEMINAR CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va., April 9 -- How parents, educators and community leaders can reduce the potential for youth aggression will be addressed by Dewey Cornell, an expert on youth violence, April 16 at the Holiday Inn-Central in Richmond. Cornell, an associate professor in the University of VirginiaÕs Curry School of Education, is nationally recognized for his expertise on youth aggression. In his keynote speech, ÒBreaking the Cycle of Violence,Ó Cornell will describe factors associated with the upsurge in youth violence in communities and schools in Virginia and throughout the United States. He will also offer comprehensive approaches for reducing the potential for youth aggression. ÒViolence is a learned behavior, and children learn to engage in violent behavior from their families, communities, and the media,Ó said Cornell, author of a study showing the relationship between juvenile violence and the availability of handguns and co-author of "Juvenile Homicide." The Violence Prevention Seminar is one of two being held this month in Virginia.
