PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT

UNIVERSITY COMMUNITY AND PUBLIC ARE INVITED TO SPECIAL RESEARCH
WORKSHOP ON U.VA.'S MODERN HISTORY APRIL 13

	"The University of Virginia in the 20th Century" will be the
focus of a special historical research workshop on Founder's Day,
April 13.

	The event, to be held from 8:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. and
headquartered in Minor Hall, is free and open to all members of the
University community and public.  Pre-registration is requested;

	The workshop, organized by the University's Rotunda Fire
Centennial Committee, will feature three sessions on numerous
graduate, undergraduate and other University-sponsored research
projects currently under way on U.Va.s' modern history, including
issues related to student life, academic culture, civil rights,
gender, labor, community relations and architecture.  Moderators
will include Commonwealth Professor of Architectural History Richard
Guy Wilson and history professor Nelson Lichtenstein.  Public
comment and discussion are invited.

 	The aims of the workshop are to share research findings
about University history and point to directions for future
projects, including possibilities of an electronic archive and a
book on the University's modern history.  Analysis of information
from hundreds of alumni survey questionnaires also will be part of
the workshop.

	The workshop is a highlight of the 1995-96 academic year,
which marks the centennial of the disastrous fire that gutted
founder Thomas Jefferson's landmark Rotunda.  The University has
dedicated the year to examining its modern history and using the
institution itself as a teaching tool and subject for research.
