U.VA. MAILS ACCEPTANCE LETTERS TO 2001 CLASS CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va., April 4 -- The University of Virginia has mailed letters offering admission in the 1997 entering class to 4,757 students. U.Va. admission officials extended offers to approximately 33 percent of the 16,692 students who applied. In addition, the University admitted 791 students through early decision. The University anticipates an entering class of 2,875 students, according to Dean of Admission John A. Blackburn. Last fall 2,825 students entered U.Va. "The University has established a plan for small, controlled growth into the next decade," Blackburn said. Students who received admission letters have until May 1 to notify the University if they will enroll. Blackburn expects that approximately 50 percent of the students who received admission offers will accept. Approximately 2,201 students have been placed on a wait-list in case fewer students than anticipated accept offers. The University experienced a decline of 633 applications over the number that applied for regular admission this year. However, the number applying for early decision increased by 150, rising to 2,325. Both the decline in regular admission and the increase in early-decision applications reflect national trends among selective colleges and universities. Of the entering class, approximately 2,260 will enroll in the College of Arts and Sciences, 90 in the School of Architecture, 480 in the School of Engineering and Applied Science, and 45 in the School of Nursing. Blackburn anticipates that approximately 65 percent of the entering class will be Virginians. ### April 3, 1997 For more information, contact John Blackburn at (804) 982-3375.
