"1492" AND "HAZMAT" TO BE PERFORMED BY THE NEW YORK NEW MUSIC ENSEMBLE CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va., April 3-- Compositions by two University of Virginia professors will be performed during the New York New Music Ensemble concert on Sunday, April 6. The concert featuring music by Virginia composers will begin at 8:15 p.m. in U.Va.'s Cabell Hall. Composers Judith Shatin and Alicyn Warren find inspiration in historical and modern events to create contemporary musical works. It's 1492. Columbus is sailing for the New World; the Jews are being expelled from Spain, and France is being invaded by Henry VII. It is a time of exhilaration and turmoil. These world-changing events are the stimulus for "1492," a composition by Judith Shatin, music professor and chairman of U.Va.'s McIntire Department of Music. In this three-part work for piano and percussion, Shatin sets, stretches and breaks boundaries. In the central section, the pianist transforms into a percussionist and the percussionist into a keyboard player. In the outer sections the performers storm into each others territories. By contrast, in the middle section there is a more contemplative feeling. Shatin creates the rhythmic structure by employing permutations of the numbers in the title. "1492" was commissioned by the Arioso Ensemble and has toured throughout the United States. "HAZMAT," a work for bass clarinet, cello, piano and percussion by Alicyn Warren, gets its title from the unsettling experience of driving on an urban highway as a huge truck full of flammable material hurtles by in the next lane. The rich voices of the bass clarinet and cello are often set against the bright timbre of the piano and percussion. "HAZMAT" was composed in early 1997 by Warren, an assistant professor. The New York New Ensemble is known for its performances, recordings and commissions of important contemporary composers. Tickets to the concert are $7 for the general public and $5 for students. U.Va. students may use ARTS$ for the event.
