U.VA. CONTEST AWARDS SPECIAL PRIZES TO STUDENT GROUPS FOR NON-ALCOHOLIC EVENTS, INCLUDING FOXFIELD RACES ALTERNATIVE CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va., April 2 -- Smart Hoos don't need booze to have fun. That is the message intended by the University of Virginia in announcing hundreds of dollars in awards to student groups in a contest to design and hold creative non-alcoholic special events this spring. The first-place winner, an adventure-challenge event set for April 26, will receive $1,000 and is timed for Albemarle County's Foxfield Races weekend. The Hoo's Hospitality Contest was sponsored by the University's Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drug Committee with funding support from the U.Va. Parents' Program. "The contest was a way to encourage students to know that there are lots of ways to have real fun without alcohol or other drugs," said Sara Hickman, health educator with the Institute for Substance Abuse Studies. The winners are: ¥ The Department of Intramural-Recreational Sports received full funding ($1,000) to sponsor a "high ropes course adventure challenge program." This event, which emphasizes teamwork over strength, will be held on Saturday, April 26, from 10 a.m.- 5 p.m. behind Zehmer Hall. It is open to all U.Va. students, faculty, and staff and there will be no charge to participants. A free t-shirt will be given to the first 50 participants. "We felt this will be an excellent alternative event to those who do not wish to attend the Foxfield Races," Hickman said. ¥ The First-Year Council received $800 to sponsor a Carnival Event on Friday, April 25, from 3-7 p.m. in the quad of the McCormick Road dorm. Some of the planned activities include a moon bounce, volleyball, a high-striker, t-shirt dying and a dunking booth. There will also be food and entertainment. This event will be free to all students. ¥ On Sunday, April 27, the Student Athlete Mentor Program is sponsoring the third annual Shoot Out Cancer Barbecue to raise money for the American Cancer Society. This will be held in the Amphitheatre from 12-5 p.m. and is open to the public. Tickets are $5 to the barbecue, which is being supported by Outback Steakhouse, Clifton Inn and Pepsi. There will also be entertainment and music. The SAMs received $800 to help them with the up-front costs of advertising and production of t-shirts and tickets. They expect approximately 2,000 people to attend. ¥ An International Center Coffee Hour Mixer will be held on Thursday, April 10, from 5-7 p.m. This will be held in Garden V and is open to the entire University community with live music, coffee, and refreshments.
