ANITA JONES RECEIVES ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING HONOR CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va., April 3 -- Anita K. Jones, a professor of computer science at the University of Virginia, has been elected a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers for her contributions to the development of computer software systems. Election to fellowship in the IEEE is bestowed on a limited number of institute members who have made outstanding contributions to the art and science of electrical, electronics and computer engineering and related disciplines, according to Charles K. Alexander Jr., 1997 president of the IEEE. This honor follows closely on another that Jones received in January. Former Secretary of Defense William Perry presented her with the Distinguished Public Service Award for her contributions to the Department of Defense during his tenure as secretary. Then as now, Jones served as director of defense research and engineering, a post that includes oversight of the entire science and technology program of the U.S. Department of Defense. Jones has been on leave from the University for the past four-and-a-half years to serve as director of the DOD's research and engineering program. She plans to return to the University this summer when her tenure in Washington expires. Jones holds a bachelor's degree in mathematics from Rice University, a master's degree in English literature from the University of Texas and a doctorate in computer science from Carnegie Mellon University. Jones was the first woman to chair a department (computer science) at U.Va.'s School of Engineering and Applied Science when elected to that post in 1988. She also was elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 1994. Jones has served on numerous corporate and government advisory boards, consulted for industry and founded her own computer company, Tartan Laboratories, with her husband U.Va. computer science professor William Wulf. ### April 2, 1997 For more information, call Charlotte Crystal, public information officer, at (804) 924 6858.
