WFPA TO PRESENT AWARDS AT ANNUAL LUNCHEON CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va., April 17 -- Two University of Virginia employees, Susie McCormick and Laurie Fajardo, M.D., have been selected by the University of Virginia's Women Faculty and Professional Association to receive the 1997 Aspiring Woman Award and the Woman of Achievement Award respectively. They will be honored at an awards luncheon May 1 in Alumni Hall. The Aspiring Woman Award honors a U.Va. employee who has been working for at least one year and is enrolled in a degree-granting program. To be eligible for the award, the employee must have had a significant interruption in her education. McCormick, director of budget and administration at Information Technology and Communication (ITC) at U.Va., "is an invaluable member of ITC's senior management team," said Virginia E. Bergland, chief operating officer at ITC. McCormick has worked at U.Va. for 27 years. While working full-time at ITC, she has pursued a bachelor of arts degree through Mary Baldwin College. While taking up to three courses a semester, McCormick has maintained a 3.9 grade point average. She will graduate in May and, after a break, plans to return to school to pursue a master's degree in business. "I am very appreciative of receiving the Aspiring Woman Award because the people of the University have been extremely supportive of my educational endeavors, and this honor solidifies everyone's support," McCormick said. WFPA's Woman of Achievement Award honors a woman who has led the way in improving the status of women or who is outstanding in her role as teacher, manager or organizer. Dr. Fajardo, vice-chair of research in radiology and professor of radiology at U.Va., is also an associate scholar at the Virginia Center for Health Policy Research. The recipient of the GE Radiology Research Academic Award, she was named a fellow by the Society of Breast Imaging in 1995. She is the author of numerous articles published in top publications. Dr. Fajardo is a member of U.Va.'s School of Medicine's Committee on Women and is the secretary-treasurer of the Association of University Radiologists. She has developed a training program to engage faculty members in clinical and research activities. "Dr. Fajardo is among the most accomplished faculty members of the School of Medicine and is an internationally renowned researcher and clinician in the field of breast imaging. She has made significant contributions in improving women's health as well as recognizing the importance of research and funding," said Bruce Hillman, M.D., in nominating Dr. Fajardo for the award. ### April 16, 1997 Television reporters should call our TV News Office at (804) 924-7550.
