The Women Faculty and Professional Association (WFPA) at the University of Virginia has tapped three employees to be honored this spring. Elizabeth K. Meyer, associate professor and chair of landscape architecture in U.Va.'s School of Architecture, will receive the organization's Woman of Achievement Award in recognition of her mentoring of young women and her contributions to the design field. Cathy S. Sides, a nursing assistant in the Children's Medical Center, and Carol Merica, a program support technician in the School of Nursing, will receive Aspiring Woman Awards. They will be honored at the WFPA's Annual Spring Luncheon and Awards Ceremony April 29 at Alumni Hall. Meyer, who earned bachelor's and master's degrees in landscape architecture from U.Va. and a master's in historic preservation from Cornell University, was associate professor at Harvard University Graduate School of Design before she returned to U.Va. in 1993 as chair of the landscape architecture department. Author of more than 20 essays and book chapters, Meyer has conducted reseach that is considered a model of feminist scholarship in the design field. She teaches landscape architecture theory courses and interdisciplinary design studios. "Elizabeth Meyer articulates a vision of teaching, design and research that is rigorous, innovative and ambitious," said Daniel Bluestone, associate professor of architectural history at U.Va. "She deserves enormous credit for her pivotal role in building and maintaining the landscape architecture department as one of the premier programs in the country." Sides, a full-time nursing assistant who works the night shift, is enrolled in the pre-nursing program at Piedmont Virginia Community College (PVCC). Merica, who has been at U.Va. for 12 years, is also a student at PVCC. After she receives her associate's degree this year, she plans to transfer to a four-year program to complete a bachelor's degree.
