A portion of information compiled by Eric W. Weisstein, a researcher in the University of Virginia's astronomy department, will soon be published as an encyclopedia. Expected in book stores by late summer, the CRC Encyclopedia of Mathematics will contain the mathematics portion of "Eric's Treasure Troves" site. Accessed approximately 58,000 times a day, the Web site supplies science information to countries all over the world. Most of the comments that Weisstein receives on the site come from teachers and high school and college students who use it as a resource. "Eric's Treasure Troves" has been one of Weisstein's ongoing projects since he was a graduate student at the California Institute of Technology. He updates the site weekly, using data that he has compiled on topics ranging from chemistry to scientific biographies to music. When the information is published in the encyclopedia, portions of the "Treasure Troves" will no longer be available on the Internet. However, the publisher also expects to release the information on CD-ROM, a format that can be easily updated. Weisstein is enthusiastic about the new uses for the information he has collected. "I'm looking forward to sharing some of the interesting, useful and fun aspects of mathematics with a larger audience. I hope this work is able to make mathematics a bit more accessible to people from all walks of life."
