April 26, 1999 Contact: Jane Ford (804) 924-4298 "SENTIMENTAL PAINTINGS" BY ARTIST JOHN ARNOLD OPENS AT FAYERWEATHER "Sentimental Paintings" by John Arnold, a fifth-year fellow in the University of VirginiaŐs McIntire Department of Art, opens at Fayerweather Gallery May 1. ArnoldŐs large-format oil paintings veil photographic images as if seen through water or translucent surfaces, sometimes obscuring them. "With each painting, I envision a specific and integrated visual phenomenon," Arnold says. "I often turn to photographs for unique clarity of recognition embedded beneath a plastic surface." The blurring of the image creates ambiguity and makes it more beautiful, he says. The fellows program affords exceptionally talented students an opportunity for more professional training. Fifth-year fellows work as assistants in various studios and develop their portfolios for competitive graduate school applications after they have earned a B.A. in liberal arts from the College of Arts and Sciences. Arnold will attend the M.F.A. program in painting at the Art Institute of Chicago in the fall. "John is extraordinarily ambitious and is one of the best painters we've had here," said Dean Dass, studio chair in U.Va.Ős McIntire Department of Art. He is working on a 10' x 16' oil painting, an aerial perspective as if from the window of an airplane, that will be the centerpiece of his exhibition. The fifth-year fellows program, now in its eighth year, has proven to be successful. Fellows have been placed in the most prestigious graduate schools, including Tyler School of Art at Temple University, UCLA and the Art Institute of Chicago. A reception for the exhibit will be held on Friday, May 7, at 5:30 p.m. with a gallery talk by the artist at 6:30 p.m. The show runs through May 8. Gallery hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. ### For more information, contact Sylvia New Strawn at (804) 924-6122 or sns@virginia.edu A photo of ArnoldŐs work is available.
