RELEASE ON RECEIPT Contact: Marguerite Beck CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA., Aug. 10 -- Dr. Barry Marshall, clinical associate professor in the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Virginia, has been awarded the Distinguished Achievement Award from the American Gastroenterological Association (AGA). The annual award recognizes an individual who has recently made a specific and monumental contribution to the science and practice of gastroenterology. Marshall was recognized for his work with Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori),a bacterium that has been shown to cause ulcers, and is linked with gastric cancer and dyspepsia. He has developed a 14-day antibiotic and bismuth therapy to eradicate the bacterium and also has devised a breath test that confirms the presence of H. Pylori in patients within 20 minutes. Founded in 1897, the AGA is one of the oldest medical specialty societies in the United States. Its 8,000 members include physicians and scientists whose practice or research involves the functioning and disorders of the gastrointestinal system. ### August 10, 1995
