U.VA. GAINS NEW EQUAL OPPORTUNITY PROGRAMS DIRECTOR CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va., Aug. 12 -- Simon Brown, an academic administrator with nearly 20 years experience in designing and implementing affirmative action policies, has been named director of the Equal Opportunity Programs Office at the University of Virginia, effective Aug. 28. Currently associate vice president for affirmative action and equal employment opportunity at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, Brown will oversee the recruitment, hiring and retention of women and minorities and will train staff in equal opportunity policy. Brown, who will have primary responsibility for equal employment and affirmative action (EO/AA) planning at the University, will also handle discrimination complaints and will monitor and promote minority student recruitment. ÒMr. BrownÕs experience makes him particularly well-equipped to work with the Health Sciences Center in developing a new Equal Opportunity Programs satellite office there,Ó said President John T. Casteen III. ÒWe look forward to his leadership in investigating and resolving discrimination complaints, providing advice and assistance to academic and administrative departments and implementing the recommendations of the work group on equal opportunity efforts that reported to me last year.Ó Brown, who has held his current position since 1989, developed a comprehensive diversity program that included forums for disseminating EO/AA information. Before joining the New Jersey institution, he served for 10 years as assistant to the president of EO/AA programs at the University of Houston, where he developed policies for affirmative action and oversaw development of grievance procedures. At U.Va. he will succeed John Garland, who has been serving as interim director since Lincoln Lewis retired last August. Brown has been affiliated with the American Association for Affirmative Action, the College and University Personnel Association and the American Association for Higher Education. A graduate of Goshen College in Indiana, he holds a masterÕs degree in education from the University of Houston. ### August 11, 1995
