UCI EXTENSION DIRECTOR NAMED; OUTREACH TO BE EXPANDED Philip Nowlen, dean of continuing education at the University of Virginia, has been named Assistant Executive Vice Chancellor for Continuing Education and Director of University Extension and Summer Sessions at the University of California at Irvine. He will assume the post Oct. 1. In his role as director of UCI Extension, Nowlen will oversee continuing education and summer academic program development and coordination. Currently, UCI Extension sustains 30,000 enrollments and provides more than 1,800 courses. Summer Session administers 300 undergraduate academic programs and enrolls more than 6,700 students annually. ÒI am pleased that our search resulted in a candidate of Phil Nowlen's stature,Ó said Executive Vice Chancellor Sidney Golub, to whom Nowlen will report. ÒHis experience in the development of innovative programs, the use of educational technology and the marriage of campus academic programs with extension courses will be a great benefit to UCI.Ó Since 1988, Nowlen has served as dean of the Division of Continuing Education at the University of Virginia, where he planned and coordinated cultural and professional development opportunities including graduate degree programs, credit courses and non-credit conferences and seminars. The academic unit -- the university's second largest -- serves more than 50,000 people annually at eight regional centers and via interactive satellite television. Nowlen also serves as director of the Museum Management Institute for the J. Paul Getty Trust, which provides an executive development program for museum leaders worldwide. Nowlen received his bachelor's degree in philosophy from St. John's College and his master's in theology from St. Paul's College in Washington, D.C. He is the author of numerous books and papers including ÒA New Approach to Continuing Education for Business and the Professions.Ó Nowlen is vice president of the National University Continuing Education Association and a member of the National Association of State Universities and Land Grant Colleges. He also serves as a board member of the Institute for Cooperation in Environmental Management and as research advisor for the National Institute for Architectural Education. ### August 25, 1995
