U.VA. TO HOST THURSDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL GAME ON SEPT. 4 CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va., Aug. 19 -- The University of Virginia will again host a Thursday night football game at Scott Stadium's David A. Harrison III Field. At 8 p.m. on Sept. 4, U.Va. will meet Auburn University in an ESPN-televised game. Gates will open at 5 p.m. U.Va. officials acknowledge that game logistics pose some challenges. "On one hand we feel more comfortable with the arrangements since we experienced a similar Thursday night game just two years ago. However, this game will be unique because it is the home opener, as well as just the second day of classes," said Mark Fletcher, associate director of athletics for facilities and operations. The academic schedule will continue as normal with most changes directly related to parking. Deans, department heads and administrative officers have been encouraged to allow employees to use annual or compensatory leave or flex time so that workers can leave the University by 3:45 p.m. that day. To reduce traffic congestion, employees are encouraged to car pool. The main changes in employee and student parking include: ¥ The entrances to the Scott Stadium blue, Bryant Hall blue and the lot on the far side of the Student Activities Building will be closed at midnight on Sept. 3. Cars will be towed starting at 10 a.m. Thursday. ¥ The east lots of Scott Stadium, the south lot at Bryant Hall, the west Grounds lots E1, E2, T1, T4, W1, W4, W5 and W6 will close at 3:45 p.m. Thursday. The alternative for permit holders who cannot leave by the prescribed time is to park in the blue lots of University Hall. ¥ Parking at University Hall, including the north Massie lot across the street, will be reserved for U.Va. employees and students. Traffic officers will be available there throughout the day to help people find parking. ¥ Employees not attending the game, but leaving work around 11:30 p.m. on Thursday night should consider alternate routes, as there may be a considerable traffic delay on 29N and I-64. ¥ The top of north Massie lot will be reserved for second-shift employees beginning at 2 p.m. Sept. 4. ¥ A limited number of passes for afternoon entry to the parking lots near Ruffner Hall: R1, R2, R3; and the physics field will be available for faculty and staff with special requirements. ¥ Additionally, faculty can request a limited number of passes for commuting students attending classes that end or meet after 3:45 p.m. Employees with such needs should contact Wynne Stuart at (804) 924-3728 as soon as possible. ¥ An additional bus route will run to and from central Grounds and the Health Sciences Center throughout the day. The green bus route will continue to run Thursday on a regular schedule. All other UTS bus service will be suspended starting at 5:30 p.m. Changes in public parking include: ¥ Ticket holders are strongly encouraged to car pool. ¥ Stadium parking lots will not open to the public until 5 p.m. ¥ There will be limited football game day parking at University Hall for the general public. No bus service will be provided from University Hall. ¥ Public parking will be available at the Fontaine Research Park on Fontaine Avenue, off the Route 250/29 bypass immediately to the right after the 29N business exit. Free shuttle service to and from the stadium will be available starting at 5 p.m. ¥ Alderman and McCormick Roads will be partially closed from 6:30 to 8 p.m. and again from 11:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. Radio stations WINA (AM 1070) and WQMZ (FM 95.1) will air traffic information starting at 5 p.m. and again after the game. ### August 18, 1997 For further parking information contact Rebecca Conley at (804) 924-7233.
