Aug. 27, 1998 Contact: Rebecca Arrington (804) 924-7189 CHARLOTTESVILLE RESIDENT RECEIVES FIRST SCHOLARSHIP ENDOWED BY U.VA. EMPLOYEES ÒTickled pinkÓ is how Wayne Ashby described his daughter when she learned that she'd received a $2,000 scholarship from the University of Virginia. It was springtime, and "I was doing yard work," recalled Ashby, director of office automation and microcomputers for U.Va.Õs Development Office. "Angela ran outside, letter in hand, to tell me she'd received the award." Angela Ashby is the first recipient of U.Va.'s new, need-based undergraduate scholarship, a unique endowment established in January 1997 and funded largely by U.Va. employees as part of the University's Faculty and Staff Campaign. A June graduate of Charlottesville High School, Ms. Ashby plans to major in math and get her master's in teaching through U.Va.'s Curry School of Education. She said her math teachers at CHS have already invited her to join their ranks when she completes her degree. For now, though, she's earning her keep as a swim instructor and lifeguard at a children's day camp in southern Albemarle. The scholarship will enable Ms. Ashby to focus more on her studies and student service interests and less on the pressures of financing her education, she said. The former CHS Student Council president hopes to volunteer at Madison House and serve on the First Year Council at U.Va. this coming year. Thirty-five children of U.Va. employees applied for the scholarship, according to James Ramsey Jr., associate director of financial aid. The scholarship is based first on the applicants' financial need and then academic and extra-curricular criteria. The information is provided by the Admissions Office, said Ramsey, who called Ms. Ashby's record "stellar." For now, the scholarship is a one-time award, but students have the option to reapply, Ramsey said. Larger or greater numbers of awards will be made as the endowment grows. It currently stands at just over $77,200. MORE 2 Since the scholarship was created, it has received the full support of U.Va. President John T. Casteen III. He has pledged that the University will match, dollar for dollar, up to $100,000 contributed by employees for the scholarship. Noting that many other colleges have long offered tuition relief to employees' children, Casteen said this new scholarship program "helps assure the opportunity is there for those who have grown up in this community." ### For additional information contact Angela and Wayne Ashby at (804) 296 8567.
