INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS GAIN HOMEY FEELING DURING HOLIDAY For international students who cannot return home during the holidays, the end-of-semester break can be bleak. The University of VirginiaÕs International Studies Office/International Center tries to give students a feeling of being home for the holidays. Lorna Sundberg, program coordinator at the International Center, arranges for foreign students to visit area homes, where they enjoy meals and holiday festivities. She notes that students from 92 countries are attending U.Va. this semester. For details on how some international students will be spending the holiday, contact Sundberg at (804) 924-7983, office, or (804) 973-5240, home. Thomas W. Payne Jr., associate dean for external affairs at U.Va.Õs McIntire School of Commerce, and his wife, Joanne, will be hosting Guangcao Ji, a Chinese graduate student, and his wife. Payne can be reached at his office, (804) 924-4169, or at home, (804) 977-9458. In addition, several area families are members of International Host Programs (IHP), a community-based group that welcomes foreign students to Charlottesville. The families contact students in their native country before they arrive in Charlottesville, often meet them at the airport, and may arrange get-togethers during their stays here. IHP member Gerda Pirsch expects to host at least two Chinese graduate students for Christmas dinner this year. She can be reached at (804) 982-3584, office, or (804) 973-6016, home. OFFICE RETURNS TO OLD HOME The International Studies Office, which coordinates activities pertaining to foreign students and scholars, has returned to its former location. The office, which provides advisors to foreign students and coordinates overseas studies and international exchanges, is once again located on the second floor of Minor Hall. (The International Center remains at 21 University Circle.) For more information, contact the office at (804) 982-3010. December 20, 1994
