CONTACT: Marguerite Beck MEDIA ADVISORY The formal dedication of the University of Virginia Jordan Hall Conference Center and Research Addition will be held on Monday, Dec. 4 and Tuesday, Dec. 5. A brief ribbon-cutting ceremony with President John T. Casteen III and other dignitaries will begin at 10 a.m. on Monday, followed by tours of the new facility. The ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held at the entrance to Jordan Hall Addition on Lane Road (off Jefferson Park Avenue). In addition, a symposium, "Structure and Function of Signaling Pathways," will be held Monday afternoon and Tuesday morning (see attached schedule). More than 100 researchers and physicians are expected to attend. The symposium is being held to honor Dr. Alfred G. Gilman, winner of the 1994 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his pioneering work on G proteins done at the University of Virginia School of Medicine. Lectures will highlight recent advances in the understanding of the structure and function of proteins in cell signaling systems. The Jordan Hall Addition is the largest single project among the University's General Obligation Bond (GOB) projects. Approximately $14 million of the $23 million construction cost was funded by bond appropriations. Facts on the Jordan Hall Addition: * The 155,000 square-foot addition will be used as lab space for the School of Medicine and a conference center for continuing medical education. * Architectural firm: RTKL of Baltimore * Construction firm: Omni Construction from the Washington area. * Construction began in early 1993. * The first occupants (research labs) moved in on Sept. 1, 1995. * U.Va.'s total GOB appropriation was $35.8 million.
