AWARD-WINNING EDUCATION RECOGNIZED AT CURRY SCHOOL CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va., Dec. 16 -- The Virginia Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation & Dance (VAHPERD), a state organization for public schools, has recognized two individuals for outstanding achievement in physical education at the University of Virginia's Curry School of Education. Honored are Joshua Antoncic, a student majoring in physical education, and Pam Walker, a clinical instructor. Antoncic received the Frances A. Mayes Outstanding Physical Education Major Award. The WEST MIFFLIN, PA native was selected from 25 applicants for his academic performance, leadership, outstanding achievement and service to the University and community. He will graduate in 1996 from the Curry School's five-year teacher-education program with both a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Teaching degree. Walker, who earned a M.Ed degree from the Curry School in 1981, received the Outstanding Elementary Physical Education Award. According to the award citation, Walker was selected on the basis of her creative teaching methods, leadership and contributions to U.Va. and the community. Although Walker teaches physical education, she integrates other subjects, such as geography, science and mathematics, into her classes. For example, at Red Hill Elementary School in North Garden where Walker teaches, she uses a world map painting on the gymnasium wall and a mural of the solar system to supplement students' learning. During exercises students count the seconds by states or planets while they are holding a stretch. Walker has also organized an unusual cross-country running club for her students. As they run around the black-top, she calculates the corresponding mileage of distance in a travel log and tracts it on a map of the United States so that her students can see how far they have run collectively. ### December 15, 1995 FOR MORE INFORMATION, contact Ann Boyce of the Curry School of Education at (804) 924-6186.
