STUDENTS CAN EXTEND LEARNING TO SATURDAYS CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va., Dec. 13 -- Learning won't end on Friday afternoons for some students in Charlottesville and surrounding counties. The University of Virginia's Curry School of Education is sponsoring an enrichment program for students in kindergarten through grade 5 on Saturday mornings, beginning Feb. 17. Now in its 13th year, the Saturday Enrichment Program provides opportunities for students enrolled in gifted programs, or those who demonstrate above-average abilities in at least one subject, to expand their learning into new areas of interest. Students in more than 70 elementary schools in Charlottesville and 10 surrounding counties are eligible for enrollment. A similar program for Orange County students begins Feb. 3. Classes offered during the six-week program are designed to encourage creative thinking and expression in students as they interact with others with similar interests, according to Darci Lieb, director of the enrichment program. Classes will provide hands-on experience in learning about science, art, mathematics, archaeology, writing, computers and a variety of cultures. Each hour-and-a-half class at U.Va. will meet at either 9 or 11 a.m. All classes for Orange County students will begin at 9:30 a.m. at the Orange County Elementary School. The registration deadline for the program is Dec. 15. Registration costs $75 per course for each student. Students who qualify for their school's free-lunch program will be eligible for scholarships that will reduce the cost to $55.
