UNIVERSITIES PREPARING TO LAUNCH NEW PROGRAM IN MANAGING INFORMATION CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va., Dec. 20 --Two universities will use the latest technology in interactive television to teach about new approaches to managing information in corporate and library settings. The University of Virginia and the University of Tennessee, Knoxville (UTK), joining forces through cooperative distance education, will offer courses that lead to a master's degree in information science, starting in the fall of 1996. Students in Virginia and Tennessee will be able to enroll in one or two courses a semester by attending classes offering live instruction and two-way audio and video connections at regional locations. U.Va. and UTK faculty will also share information and facilitate discussions over the Internet. Organized at U.Va. through the Division of Continuing Education, the program will be available to students at eight locations, including four in Virginia. Students will attend classes at the University's continuing education centers in Northern Virginia, Hampton Roads, Roanoke and Charlottesville. Classes will also be held in Kingsport, Tenn., an area convenient to students in Southwest Virginia. "Although many positions require master's degrees in library science, no Virginia institution offers such a degree," said Joyce Feucht-Haviar, associate dean for academic affairs in U.Va.'s continuing education division. Students must submit a formal application to UTK by July 1 in order to be eligible for classes starting in the fall, Feucht-Haviar noted. "The program will take a contemporary look at information sciences. It will not be the traditional approach to storing and retrieving information in libraries," she said. Students who wish to earn a master's degree will complete core courses in a variety of subjects including electronic information and communications and the selection, acquisition and evaluation of information resources. After completing the core curriculum, students can explore courses in five areas including electronic publishing, corporate information systems and scientific information. "With the two institutions working together, tuition costs will be lower than the usual out of-state tuition rate," Feucht-Haviar noted. For program information, people can call UTK at (423) 974-2148 or U.Va. at (804) 982 5207. ### December 19, 1995 FOR MORE INFORMATION before the holidays, contact Joyce Feucht-Haviar at (804) 982-5208 through Dec. 22.
