Dec. 23, 1997 COURSES PROVIDE OPPORTUNITY TO GAIN FOREIGN PERSPECTIVE ON EDUCATION For people who want to gain new perspectives on education, the University of Virginia will offer two special courses abroad this summer. A new course, "The Future of Higher Education," will be held at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland, June 13-19. Faculty from U.Va., the University of Edinburgh and other Scottish institutions will examine a variety of factors that will determine the character of higher education in the 21st century, including changing demographics, aging facilities, tight finances and distance learning. For those who want to examine K-12 education, a Summer Institute for Educators will be held June 21-27 at the University of Oxford in England. U.Va. and Oxford faculty will take a close look at several British education concepts that are being discussed in America, such as charter-school vouchers, standardized curricula and increased school accountability.
