94-02-03 New Publishing Program Offered at University of Virginia Division of Continuing Education NEW PUBLISHING PROGRAM OFFERED AT UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA DIVISION OF CONTINUING EDUCATION CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va., Feb. 3 -- The University of Virginia Division of Continuing Education has appointed Beverly Jane Loo to serve as director of its new publishing and communications program. Loo will work with University faculty and industry leaders to develop courses to be offered at the University's seven regional centers spread throughout Virginia (including one in Northern Virginia, which takes in extensive publishing communities of Alexandria, Reston, Falls Church, Arlington and Washington, D.C.) in fall 1994. The program will cover all aspects of publishing, including editing, effective writing in business and the professions, marketing, advertising, promotion, direct mail, production and design, and new technologies. A sampling of courses is being offered for the spring semester. Loo formerly was director of marketing at Thomasson-Grant publishing in Charlottesville, and was for many years executive editor and director of subsidiary rights of McGraw-Hill's General Books Division in New York. Because of the increasing demand for effective written communications and the new technology available to companies who are producing in-house documents, the program is being developed to meet the needs of both those involved in traditional publishing (such as books, magazines and journals), and non-traditional "publishers" in small and large businesses, government agencies, health care centers, financial services, libraries and professional firms. In many organizations internal communications, as well as marketing efforts, rely heavily on in-house produced publications, including newsletters, catalogs, proposals, reports, research papers, direct mail promotions, print advertising and the like. The program will also offer workshops, seminars and summer institutes in special topics such as trade, museum, technical, and electronic publishing, with noted academics and professionals in these leading the workshops and discussions. Enrollments are expected to come from the publishing community, professional firms, government agencies, corporations, as well as editors, librarians, researchers and educators. ### February 2, 1994 FOR MORE INFORMATION, Loo may be reached at (804) 296-4806.
