94-02-18 Jones, Kuhlmann-Wilsdorf Elected to National Academy of Engineering JONES, KUHLMANN-WILSDORF ELECTED TO NATIONAL ACADEMY OF ENGINEERING CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va., Feb. 18 -- University of Virginia professors Anita K. Jones and Doris Kuhlmann-Wilsdorf have been elected to the National Academy of Engineering, joining four of their colleagues as members of the prestigious organization. "Election to the academy signifies important contributions to engineering theory and practice," said NAE President Robert M. White. "It honors those who have demonstrated unusual accomplishments in new and developing fields of technology." The NAE elected 79 engineers and eight foreign associates this year, bringing the agency's total membership to 1,880. Jones, a professor of computer science, was cited for her work in the design and construction of programmed systems, as well as for public service. Currently, Jones is on leave of absence from U.Va. and is director of defense research and engineering for the U.S. Department of Defense. She was U.Va.'s computer science department head from 1988 to 1993. Kuhlmann-Wilsdorf, a university professor of applied science, was honored for her study of crystal defects in materials and their impact on mechanical behavior. A member of the U.Va. faculty since 1963, she has received numerous awards including the Virginia Academy of Science's J. Shelton Horsley Award, the German Society of Materials Science's Heyn Medal and the Ragnar Holm Scientific Achievement Award from the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. Four other U.Va. faculty are members of the NAE: Elmer J. Gaden Jr., the Wills Johnson Professor of Chemical Engineering; Lester A. Hoel, the Janet Scott and John Dowman Hamilton Professor of Civil Engineering; Louis T.
