94-02-21 Public Service Announcement PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT On Wednesday, Feb. 23, Kwame Ture will speak on "Black People Need Organization Not Leaders" at 9 p.m. in the University of Virginia's Gilmer Hall Auditorium. Ture (born Stokely Carmichael) was active in the movement for civil rights and was a leading proponent of black power and pan- Africanism during the 1960s. As a student, he worked with the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee from 1960 to 1967 radically changing the focus of the organization. Ture has served as an organizer for the All-African People's Revolutionary Party in the People's Revolutionary Republic of Guinea, where he has lived since 1968.
