MEDIA ADVISORY The University of Virginia athletics department will give $75,000 -- nearly half -- of its $164,579 Independence Bowl earnings to the fund that supports the CavaliersŐ Distinguished Teaching Professorship. The endowed chair, established at the suggestion of student athletes to recognize professors who excell at teaching, was created in 1991 with a $200,000 gift from the departmentŐs proceeds from the 1990 Sugar Bowl. The chair is currently held by economics professor Kenneth G. Elzinga. The remaining money from this yearŐs post-season game will go to undetermined facilities improvements, according to interim athletic director Craig Littlepage. In recent years, the department also donated $325,000 to improve the telephone course-registration system and computerized information searching services in the University library.
