ÒPARTISAN INFLUENCES ON ETHICS INVESTIGATIONSÓ TO BE SUBJECT OF SYMPOSIUM CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va., Feb. 9 -- A symposium exploring ÒPartisan Influences on Ethics InvestigationsÓ will be held at the University of Virginia School of Law on Saturday, Feb. 11. Legal scholars, political scientists, government ethics officials and practicing lawyers will discuss many of the recent government ethics accusations and investigations, including the Whitewater probe and House Speaker Newt GingrichÕs financial dealings, and the role of partisan influences, sensationalism and mudslinging by both Republicans and Democrats. The symposium will be held from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Caplin Auditorium. Sponsored by the Journal of Law and Politics, it is free and open to the public. Numerous participants will include Bob Schiff, staff attorney with Ralph NaderÕs Public CitizenÕs Congress Watch; Leslie Wilcox, associate general counsel with the U.S. Office of Government Ethics; David Tell, communications director with the ÒProject for a Republican FutureÓ; and Alexia Morrison, who served as independent counsel under the Ethics in Government Act of 1978 when the U.S. Supreme Court upheld the constitutionality of that post.
