CALL FOR PAPERS OR WORKS-IN-PROGRESS ON U.VA.'S 20TH CENTURY HISTORY Anyone conducting research on any aspect of the University of Virginia's 20th century history is invited to submit a one-page description of the work for possible discussion in a special public Founder's Day workshop that will focus on U.Va.'s modern history. Deadline for submission of the one-page abstract is March 8. Participation is encouraged not only for U.Va. undergraduates, graduate students, faculty, administrators and alumni but also anyone else researching U.Va.'s 20th century history. The abstracts, which may describe works-in-progress or a completed project, should be submitted to Edna Johnston, U.Va. Rotunda Fire Anniversary Committee, P.O. Box 9013, Charlottesville 22906. Authors of projects selected by the committee will be invited to make brief presentations at the workshop. The April 13 workshop on University history will be a highlight of the 1995-96 academic year, which marks the centennial of the disastrous fire that gutted founder Thomas Jefferson's landmark Rotunda. The University has dedicated the year to examining its modern history and using the institution itself as a teaching tool and subject for research. Several faculty members and graduate students and a special undergraduate class have research under way. Any aspect of U.Va.'s modern history will be considered for discussion, especially issues related to student life, academic culture, civil rights, gender, labor, administration, community relations or architecture. The aims of the workshop are to share research findings about University history and point to directions for future research. Analysis of information from hundreds of recent alumni survey questionnaires also will be part of the workshop. All research presented will become part of the University Archives, of which only a very small portion currently focuses on U.Va. student life and culture.
