ABSTRACT LANDSCAPES A VIEW INTO THE DISTANCE CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va., Feb. 21-- The works of abstract landscape painter Steve Baris will be exhibited at the University of Virginia's Fayerweather Gallery Feb. 25 through March 27. A reception will be held the opening night of the exhibit, Friday, Feb. 28, 5 p.m. Baris's work is often described as abstract impressionism, giving the sensation of landscape dissolving into mist or fog. Using thin glazes of oil applied in distinct layers, Baris heightens the effect of looking through layers of foliage or clouds. In residence at U.Va.'s McIntire Department of Art March 20-22, Baris will lecture on the development of his work on Thursday, March 20, at 8 p.m. in Campbell Hall, Room 160. Baris received his M.F.A. from the Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia in 1985. His most recent solo exhibition was in the Schmidt/Dean Gallery in Philadelphia in 1996. He resides in Bryn Mawr, PA. The exhibition and lecture are open to the public. February 20, 1997 ### For additional information please contact the McIntire Department of Art at (804) 924 6123.
