DEAF ARTISTS TO PRESENT LECTURE SERIES AT U.VA. CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va., Feb. 26 -- Poetry in motion describes presentations at the annual deaf culture lecture series to be held at the University of Virginia beginning Thursday, Feb. 27. Art in the deaf community is the focus of U.Va.'s American Sign Language Deaf Culture Lecture Series which will feature three deaf artists exploring the creative manner in which the hand, eye and body are used to communicate. * Feb. 27 -- Peter Cook, a poet and American Sign Language (ASL) instructor at Columbia College and Northwestern University will use ASL, mime and visual gestures to perform poetry at Campbell Hall, Room 153. * March 20 -- Betty G. Miller, artist and former professor of art at Gallaudet University, will use her paintings and collages to discuss the deaf experience at McLeod Hall. Miller, co-founder of De'VIA (Deaf View Image Art), is the first deaf woman to receive a doctorate. * April 22 -- Bernard Bragg, actor, playwright and author, will present "Signs on Stage: A Look at Deaf Theatre," in McLeod Hall. Bragg, a former artist in residence at Gallaudet University, is a founding member of the National Theatre of the Deaf. All presentations begin at 7 p.m. and are open and free to the public. Voice interpretation will be provided for non-signers. The series co-directors are Lisa J. Berke and Chris Krentz. It is sponsored by the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities, the U.Va.
