INDIAN AMBASSADOR TO SPEAK AT U.VA. CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va., Feb. 4 -- The Indian Ambassador to the U.S., Naresh Chandra, will give a public address in the Dome Room of the Rotunda at the University of Virginia at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 5. He will speak on "Indo-United States Relations: Entering a New Era." Chandra's recent appointment caps a long career as a civil servant who has held a series of important posts in the Indian administrative service and federal government. Chandra joined the Indian administrative service in 1956 and served in numerous capacities, including that of Chief Secretary in the state of Rajasthan. In December 1990 he became Cabinet Secretary, the top post in the Indian civil service, from which position he retired in 1992. Following his appointments as senior advisor to India's Prime Minister and as the governor of the state of Gujarat, he assumed the post of Ambassador of India to the United States in April 1996.
