PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT AROUND AND ABOVE/LANDSCAPE AND SYMBOL "Over the Door" and in the garden are the subjects of an exhibit of the works of noted New York photographer John Yang. Around and Above/Landscape and Symbol can be seen at the University of Virginia's School of Architecture, Campbell Hall, Exhibition Room A, Feb. 25 through March 28. Yang's close observation of the streetscapes of Manhattan and its ornamentation of buildings adorned with the images of gods, youths, maidens, cherubs, animals, plants, monsters, and mythological beasts are the subjects of photos from his book, "Over the Door," published by the Princeton Architectural Press. Yang's landscape architecture subjects are photographed with a panoramic Cirkut Camera manufactured in 1903 in Rochester, N.Y. Movement of the camera and film is synchronized. The camera rotates, powered with a spring which is wound before each shot. Photographs and negatives range up to six-and-a-half feet long. Yang's landscape photographs are in a number of public collections of photography including the Museum of Modern Art, Metropolitan Museum of Art, National Museum of American Art, and the Chasanoff Collection at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. The exhibit is open to the public 8 a.m. - 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.
