ON FRIDAY SECRETARY OF HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES AMONG SPEAKERS ON FEB. 6 U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Donna E. Shalala will speak at the University of Virginia's Wilson Hall auditorium, at 7 p.m. Shalala, who has served in the Clinton administration since 1993, previously served as chancellor of the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She will respond to questions directly after her talk. It is sponsored by the Jefferson Literary and Debating Society. ### Robert A. F. Thurman, a friend of the Dalai Lama and one of Time magazine's 25 most influential Americans of 1997, will speak at 3 p.m. at U.Va.'s Minor Hall Auditorium. Thurman, a world-renowned expert on Tibetan Buddhism, will discuss "Discovering Death: The Tibetan Exploration of the World Beyond Death." His talk is sponsored by the Associates of the University Library. ### The Virginia Project on the Economics of Higher Education will sponsor a talk, "Part Church and Part Car Dealer: The Odd Economics of Higher Education," at 2 p.m. in U.Va.Us Ruffner Hall, Room G004B. Gordon Winston of Williams College will discuss how large student subsidies, with students paying two-thirds of the cost at the average U.S. college or university, relate to the economic behavior of colleges and universities.
