NOVELIST AND SCREENWRITER ROBERT STONE TO BE REA VISITING WRITER AT U.VA. CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va., Feb. 1 -- Award-winning novelist and screenwriter Robert Stone will be the Rea Visiting Writer in the University of Virginia English department the week of Feb. 19. Stone, who won the National Book Award in 1975 for his novel "Dog Soldiers," will read from his work at 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 22 in Campbell Hall 153. He will give an informal talk about his novels and screenplays at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 20 in Campbell Hall 153. Both events are free and open to the public. Stone, a native of Brooklyn, is also the author of three other acclaimed novels, "A Hall of Mirrors" (1967), "A Flag for Sunrise" (1981) and "Children of the Light" (1986). Stone's writings, peopled by colorful, down-and-out characters, have brought him numerous honors and recognition for his artistry. Among them are a Guggenheim fellowship (1971), the John Dos Passos Prize for literature (1982) and a fellowship from the National Endowments for the Arts (1983). He has contributed his work to many literary journals, magazines and collections. Stone has also turned two of his novels, "A Hall of Mirrors" and "Dog Soldiers," into well received screenplays. He is affiliated with several writing associations, including the Authors Guild and PEN, for which he serves on the executive board. The Rea Visiting Writer program in the English department is supported by the Dungannon Foundation of New York. The foundation's president, Michael M.
