HARTZ ASSUMES TEMPORARY LEADERSHIP OF U.VA.'S BAYLY ART MUSEUM CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. Jan. 21-- Jill Hartz, a writer and public relations specialist with more than 10 years of experience in art museum management, has been named interim director of the University of Virginia's Bayly Art Museum. Hartz will continue her present position as director of communications in U.Va.'s Arts and Sciences Development Office, but will devote the majority of her time to the Bayly when its director, Anthony G. Hirschel, leaves Jan. 22 to become director of Emory University's Michael C. Carlos Museum. Before joining U.Va. in 1994, Hartz worked at Cornell University's Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art for 10 years. From 1986 to 1993, she served as director of public relations and publications and organized major exhibitions at the museum. She was also public relations and special programs coordinator for Cornell's Council for the Arts. "I am very excited about returning to the museum field," Hartz said. "Every museum has its own special character and set of challenges, and I am looking forward to working with the Bayly staff to learn more about its history, challenges and priorities. Because a university art museum has a special teaching mission, I hope to build on Tony Hirschel's success in strengthening our ties with faculty and students." Hartz, who studied at Oberlin College, earned a M.A. with honors in English language and literature in 1973 from the University of St. Andrews in Scotland. Provost Peter W. Low expects to establish a committee soon to search for a full-time museum director. ### January 20, 1997 Television reporters should call our TV News Office at (804) 924-7550.
