Herr, professor of cell biology at the University of Virginia School of Medicine, was awarded the Munksgaard Award by the American Society for Reproductive Immunology at the Sixth International Congress of Reproductive Immunology held in Washington, D.C., in July. The award is presented annually to a distinguished investigator in the field of reproductive immunology. Herr received recognition for his work on understanding the mechanism by which the immune system recognizes sperm cells and for his record of training young scientists in the field of reproductive biology, according to the Society. Herr serves as the director of the Center for Recombinant Gamete Contraceptive Vaccinogens at U.Va. The center is working to isolate and test sperm and egg molecules that might be candidates for making a contraceptive vaccine.
