STUDENTS, FACULTY, ALUMNI CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va., JULY 14 -- Numerous individuals received awards and scholarships during Education Day 1995, an annual spring event at the University of VirginiaÕs Curry School of Education that honors alumni, faculty and students. This yearÕs award recipients are: Annette Gibbs, director of the Center for the Study of Higher Education, was given the 1995 Outstanding Professor Award, bestowed annually to a person who, according to the citation, Õpromotes professional development of students through quality instruction and personal dedication.Ó A professor of education, Gibbs was also cited for superior classroom teaching, program advising and counselling. She lives in CHARLOTTESVILLE. Donna Ford-Harris of LEXINGTON, KY and CHARLOTTESVILLE received the Black Graduate Students in Education Award presented to a Curry School faculty member who has contributed academic research on issues related to blacks in education. Ford-Harris researches factors contributing to success in gifted minority students. Henry I. Willett Jr. of VIRGINIA BEACH received the Distinguished Alumnus award given to a graduate whose contributions in the field of education have earned both state and national recognition. A program director for graduate programs in administration and supervision at George Washington University, Willett teaches courses on school law, personnel management and public relations. He has served as chairman of the Council of Presidents of VirginiaÕs state-supported colleges and universities and president of the Association of Virginia Colleges. April K. Lloyd of CHARLOTTESVILLE and Myra J. Haney of ARLINGTON received Outstanding Teacher Awards designed to honor Curry School graduates who have made significant contributions through their teaching. Lloyd is a teacher at Burnely-Moran Elementary School in Charlottesville, and Haney is a teacher at J.E.B. Stuart High School in Fairfax County. Traci Dawn Arbogast of CHARLOTTESVILLE received the Dr. Susan Bjork OÕBrien Memorial Award, which supports students pursuing careers in early childhood education. Kimberly Ann Robin Finkelman of RESTON received the Bernard W. Busse Award presented to an outstanding teacher-education student pursuing elementary education. Paul Edward Green of ST. LOUIS, MO received the Walter Eugene Campbell Award presented to a student who shows leadership in instruction and administration. Soo Hong of BALTIMORE, MD received the Jessie C. Carpenter Award given annually to a graduate student who has contributed outstanding service to the Curry School of Education. Barbara Anne King of VIENNA received the David F. Cooke Award presented annually to a student-athlete who exemplifies outstanding qualities in athletics, academics and leadership both in and out of the classroom. Hiram Samuel Miller of CHARLOTTESVILLE received the Annette Gibbs Research/Publication Award presented to an outstanding student in the Center for the Study of Higher Education at the Curry School. Katrina Eid of VIENNA received the Mary Alice Gunter Award given to a doctoral student who is pursuing an advanced degree while holding a full-time position in a public school system. The award honors an outstanding student and educator who provides community service and leadership. Katherine Noller of RICHMOND received the Homer Humphreys Award given annually to an outstanding undergraduate in teacher education. Frederick George Assaf of CAMP HILL, PA received the Richard A. Meade Award given annually to a graduate student pursuing English education. Gary Edward Goodnough of TROY received the William Van Hoose Memorial Award given annually to an outstanding student pursuing counselor education. Colicia Monique Meyerowitz of ALBUQUERQUE, NM received the Shannon Award given to a student who has contributed significantly to the academic excellence of a school. Mary Layne Kalbfleisch of CHARLOTTESVILLE received the Paul B. Walter Award presented to an outstanding masterÕs degree student. Isabel Barrow of CHARLOTTESVILLE received the George C. Graham Scholarship awarded annually to an outstanding graduate student in the McGuffey Reading Program in the Curry School. Rodney Hopson of HAMPTON received the Nathan E. Johnson Memorial Scholarship. Established in memory of the first African-American faculty member at U.Va., the scholarship perpetuates the impact of JohnsonÕs career in the Curry School. Stacey Jill Beckenstein of CHARLOTTESVILLE received the Joan Larie Bell Scholarship. The award is given to a masterÕs degree student who exhibits qualities of a great teacher including leadership, enthusiasm and the pursuit of excellence in the educational process. Allison Bronwyn Ford of WASHINGTON, DC received the Elsie Hughes Cabell Endowed Scholarship. Based on academic achievement and financial need, the scholarship is awarded to a student in his or her final year before receiving a degree. Razel Elaine Solow of CHARLOTTESVILLE received the Curry School of Education Scholarship that supports the work of an outstanding graduate student. Jenine Marie Pendleton of GORDONSVILLE received the Gladys M. Graham Scholarship given annually to a student in the top quarter of the class in the five-year teacher-education program. Edward Maurice Trusty Jr. of BALTIMORE, MD received the Inge Family Scholarship that supports an out-of-state student pursuing teacher education. Jenifer Lynn Blair of RICHMOND received the Miriam and Edward D. Knight Scholarship that supports a graduate of Mary Washington College who pursues graduate studies at the Curry School of Education. David Ogden Krovetz of NORTH GARDEN received the William C. Lowry Scholarship that supports a teacher-education student planning to teach mathematics. Alison Edwena Reed of TOLEDO, OH received the Odelia Moore Scholarship that supports an outstanding student in teacher education. Jennifer Elizabeth Annis of HERNDON received the Estelle B. Seward Scholarship. The annual award provides fellowship assistance to an outstanding student in mathematics. Sarah Thomas Mumford of CHARLOTTESVILLE received the Hunter Page Taylor Memorial Scholarship. The award supports a student in the top quarter of the class in the Curry SchoolÕs five-year teacher-education program who is preparing to teach a foreign language. Catherine Ann Rood of OAKTON received the Outstanding Bachelor of Education Student Award. Rebecca Jane Hooper of MIDLOTHIAN received the Outstanding Master of Education Award, and Leigh Ann White of GREAT FALLS received the Outstanding Master of Teaching Award.
