FIFTH ANNUAL CELEBRATION OF CHILDREN'S LITERATURE Experts Reveal Their Secrets To Writing Children's Literature CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va., July 27 -- The Fifth Annual Celebration of Children's Literature will be held Friday, Aug. 9, from 8:45 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. at the Learning Resource Center auditorium on the campus of Virginia Highlands Community College in Abingdon. The workshop is designed to help elementary teachers and public and school librarians strengthen children's appreciation of literature. They will have the opportunity to hear nationally recognized children's writers speak on the process of writing and what they hope to achieve with their stories. The day will include hands-on activities for use in classrooms and libraries. Sessions throughout the day will be conducted by Janet Hickman, Boston Globe/Horn Book Honoree; Lynn Reiser, psychiatrist and author; Judith Rosenfeld, book reviewer and editor of the "Open Book," a quarterly review of new children's books and developer of the Celebration of Children's Literature; Suzanne Reid, author of two books profiling children's authors and Lawrence Yep, Newbery honored author-illustrator. The Celebration of Children's Literature, held each year during the Virginia Highlands Festival, is sponsored by the University of Virginia Southwest Center and the Creative Writing Committee of the Virginia Highlands Festival in cooperation with Virginia Highlands Community College.
