U.VA. PROFESSOR RECEIVES LAMP OF KNOWLEDGE AWARD CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va., July 29 -- The Virginia Association of Secondary School Principals (VASSP) recently presented its highest honor, the Lamp of Knowledge Award, to University of Virginia education professor Robert Lynn Canady. The Lamp of Knowledge Award recognizes outstanding contributions in public education. Canady is the third recipient of VASSP's highest award in the organization's 91 years of existence. Canady's major publications have been in areas of grading practices, implementing programs for at-risk students and restructuring schools through block scheduling. The block scheduling approach reduces classes per term for teachers and students, providing variable blocks of teaching time that allow greater student involvement. Among Canady's recent books are "Block Scheduling: A Catalyst for Change in High Schools" and "Teaching in the Block; Strategies for Engaging Active Learners," both co-authored with Michael D. Rettig. A native of Dickson, TN, Canady earned his doctorate in education from the University of Tennessee. Before joining U.Va.'s faculty in 1970, he taught in grades 4-12, served as principal of elementary, middle, and junior high schools in Tennessee and Kentucky and worked with school districts in 35 states and Germany. Canady received the Adelle F. Robertson Award 1988 through the Division of Continuing Education for distinguished teaching and service to Virginia schools. He became chair of the Department of Leadership, Foundations and Policy in U.Va.'s Curry School of Education in 1990, winning the U.Va. Alumni Association's Distinguished Professor Award the same year. ### July 28, 1997 For more information, contact R. Lynn Canady at (804) 924-0861 or 924-3160.
