94-06-08 Racial Desegregation of Public Education Focus of U.Va. Summer on the Lawn Program RACIAL DESEGREGATION OF PUBLIC EDUCATION FOCUS OF U.VA. SUMMER ON THE LAWN PROGRAM CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. June 8 -- The impact of the historic Brown v. Board of Education ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court 40 years ago will be assessed as part of the University of Virginia's 14th annual Summer on the Lawn Institute June 12-16. Desegregation at U.Va. will also be discussed by some of the key persons involved at the time. Richmond attorney Oliver W. Hill, who served as co-counsel for the plaintiffs in the Prince Edward County companion case to Brown, one of the six cases considered by the Court, will talk about his experience Tuesday, June 14, at 9 a.m. in the Newcomb Hall South Meeting Room. Joining other experts on civil rights history, David J. Garrow, author of the award-winning biography of Martin Luther King Jr., "Bearing the Cross," will talk about civil rights scholarship June 15 at 10:30 a.m. in the South Meeting Room. He will participate in a forum on the state of school desegregation law today with U.Va. law professors Pamela Karlan and Michael J. Klarman also on June 15 at 3 p.m. in the same location. Leroy Willis, the first African-American to live on the Lawn and graduate from the College of Arts and Sciences, will join a panel discussion on the experience of black students in the early years of desegregation in Zehmer Hall auditorium June 14 at 1:30 p.m. Reginald Wilson, founder of Upward Bound and senior scholar of the American Council on Education, will follow the panel at 4 p.m., speaking on the historical significance of the court's decision. There will also be a reception with some of the other African-American students who graduated from U.Va. -- there were 25 black alumni between 1955 and 1969 -- and the community members and faculty who supported them.
