94-06-17 William W. Harmon is Named Vice President for Student Affairs at the University of Virginia WILLIAM W. HARMON IS NAMED VICE PRESIDENT FOR STUDENT AFFAIRS AT THE UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va., June 16 -- William W. Harmon, vice chancellor for student affairs at the University of Pittsburgh, has been named the University of Virginia's vice president for student affairs, U.Va. President John T. Casteen III announced today. Harmon, who has overseen student programs for the 34,000- student University of Pittsburgh system since 1990 and has long taken an active role nationally on issues affecting college students, will become vice president at Virginia effective Aug. 15. He succeeds Robert T. Canevari, who has served as interim vice president since Ernest H. Ern became senior vice president in July 1993. Canevari will return to the position of dean of students. "Mr. Harmon is an intelligent, thoughtful leader who has earned the respect of his colleagues throughout a career of progressive responsibility," Casteen said in announcing the appointment. "He comes with some of the strongest recommendations I have ever seen. He has broad experience in student affairs administration and an understanding of the fundamental value this University places on student self-governance. We are fortunate to have attracted him here." Harmon has written and spoken widely on ways to improve the educational environment for college students and on a broad range of national education issues including advising and counseling, student-retention, minority careers and health care. As vice president at U.Va., he will be responsible for the dean of students office, including the residential life program; the office of African-American Affairs; student health and counseling services; University Union programs and facilities; financial aid; and the office of career planning and placement. Harmon served as associate vice president for student affairs and dean of University College at Wichita State University from 1985 to 1990. Before that he held posts with the College of Health Professions at Wichita State, including serving as associate dean of academic and student affairs and director of the Health Careers Opportunity Program. Harmon has received a number of honors for his work on education issues, including selection for Leadership Kansas, a statewide program sponsored by the Kansas Chamber of Commerce, and a Council for the Advancement and Support of Education Gold Medal Award for innovation in higher education programming. While he was dean of Wichita State's University College, it received national citations for its advising programs and for efforts to retain students. Among numerous educational, civic and community organizations Harmon has chaired are a Pennsylvania Department of Higher Education task force on inter-group relations and the University of Pittsburgh chancellor's task force on campus safety and security. Harmon holds a Ph.D. in higher education administration from Kansas State University, an M.A. in educational counseling and guidance from Seton Hall University, and a B.S. in biology from Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, N.C. Before joining the administration at Wichita State he served as an education coordinator and later director of the office of student affairs at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. He has also worked with anti-poverty and job- training programs in North Carolina and Washington, D.C. He has taught a variety of undergraduate and graduate courses in health care and counseling fields. Harmon is married to Beverly P. Harmon, who is also an educator. Mrs. Harmon has served as a principal and teacher at the elementary school level. She currently serves as a researcher in the Learning Research and Development Center at the University of Pittsburgh.
