RELEASE ON RECEIPT PSYCHOLOGY PROFESSORS SANDRA SCARR AND IRVING GOTTESMAN ARE HONORED CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va., June 2 -- University of Virginia psychology professors Sandra Scarr and Irving Gottesman recently have won prestigious honors for their work. Scarr recently earned the dual distinction of being named to the governing body of two national professional organizations. A fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (AAAS) since 1989, Scarr was elected in mid-May to the governing council of the 4,000-member organization, the country's oldest academic society. The AAAS recognizes scholarly achievement in the humanities and serves as a think-tank for various academic issues. In addition, Scarr was chosen as president-elect of the American Psychological Society, the 15,000- member organization representing research and academic psychologists. Scarr will serve one-year terms as president-elect, president and past-president. The National Alliance for the Mentally Ill, the country's largest advocacy group for the seriously mentally ill, will give psychology professor Irving Gottesman the Stephen V. Logan award at its annual meeting July 22 in Washington, D.C. The award is given to psychologists who have made outstanding contributions to the field of mental illness research. The U.Va. psychology department's division of developmental psychology ranked second in the nation as a specialty program in U.S. News and World Report's March 20th ratings of America's best graduate schools. The rankings were based on the department's reputation for scholarship and the quality of the faculty and graduate students. ### June 1, 1995
