MEDIA ADVISORY U.VA.'S DR. SHARON HOSTLER RECEIVES BRAZELTON AWARD, CHILDREN'S MEDICAL CENTER WINS NATIONAL RECOGNITION The Association for the Care of Children's Health (ACCH) today presented its highest academic honor, the T. Berry Brazelton Lecture Award, to Dr. Sharon Hostler of the University of Virginia. Hostler is the McLemore Birdsong professor of pediatrics, chief of developmental pediatrics and medical director of the Kluge Children's Rehabilitation Center. Dr. T. Berry Brazelton, an internationally know pediatrician and one of the association's founders, presented the award named in his honor to Hostler at the ACCH's 31st annual conference in Albuquerque, New Mexico, on Wednesday, June 12. Hostler is the sixth recipient of the award. The U.Va.'s Children's Medical Center also received the association's national award in the large pediatric facility category for this year's "Children in Healtcare Week" programs. The programs seek to heighten the public's awareness of the unique needs of hospitalized children and their families. This is the second time in three years the CMC has received this national award. Linda Drake, program coordinator, accepted the honor. Hostler addressed the closing session of the association's Albuquerque conference, encouraging her health care colleagues to learn from the lessons of young patients, listen to their concerns, as well as those of their families, when determining appropriate courses of care. She was joined in her presentation by fellow U.Va. pediatrician Dr. Richard Kesler, Hospital Education Director Nancy Artis, and hospital teacher Marta Gilliam in a program designed to highlight the CMC's community approach to patient care. The Association for the Care of Children's Health is an educational and advocacy organization which promotes family-centered care in its efforts to improve health care systems for children and their families.
