ROBERT O'NEIL TO SPEAK ON FIRST AMENDMENT ISSUES AND THE INTERNET AT CURRY SCHOOL CONFERENCE CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va., June 7 -- Robert M. O'Neil, University of Virginia law professor and director of the Thomas Jefferson Center for the Protection of Free Expression, will lead a seminar on First Amendment issues and the Internet at a conference June 19 at U.Va.'s Curry School of Education. O'Neil, a former president of U.Va., will lead a presentation from 11 a.m. to noon at the conference. The day-long Internet conference, titled "http://www.Student Affairs and Cyberspace: Making the Connection" is a regional workshop sponsored by the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA). The rapid advances of technology on college campuses challenge student affairs professionals to incorporate changes in their services to students. The workshop offers student affairs professionals seminars focusing on students, the Internet and technology. O'Neil, an expert on First Amendment rights, teaches courses in constitutional and copyright law at the University's law school. "In the ever changing landscape of the Internet, it is necessary to identify issues we ought to be dealing with," said O'Neil. "There are no polices to address [these] yet, but we need to form them quickly." O'Neil points out that rules governing print material are useful, but do not necessarily adapt to electronic communications, and he advises that careful thought be given to the formation of new policies. O'Neil will touch on such topics as sexually explicit material, sexist postings, offensive racial remarks, transmitting threatening material, invasion of privacy in regard to e-mail, flagrant electronic gay-bashing, virulent neo-Nazi material as well as the unauthorized use of a university logo on a home page for business purposes. All of these issues will be illustrated with examples of incidents from universities around the country. Registration fee for the conference is $20 for professional or student members if paid by May 29. On-site registration is $30 for all. Fee includes lunch in the Rotunda. ### June 6, 1996 For additional information about the conference contact Julie Rhen at (804) 924-3880.
