STUDENTS, FACULTY AND ALUMNI CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va., June 7 -- Numerous individuals received awards and scholarships during Education Day 1997, an annual spring event at the University of Virginia's Curry School of Education that honors alumni, faculty and students. Three Outstanding Teacher Awards, designed to honor Curry School graduates who have made significant contributions through their teaching, were awarded to elementary, middle and high school teachers. Eleanor Christine Braxton of FREDERICKSBURG received the Outstanding Elementary School Teacher Award. She teaches at the Stafford Elementary School in Stafford County. Gregory Martin of MARTINSVILLE received the Outstanding Middle School Teacher Award. He teaches at the Martinsville Middle School in Henry County. Linda Karen Miller of STERLING received the Outstanding Secondary School Teacher Award. At Fairfax High School, Miller teaches a variety of courses including political science, European history, American government and world cultures. James M. Kauffman received the 1997 Outstanding Professor Award. The award is given to a professor who promotes professional development of students through quality instruction and personal education. In promoting the professional development of students, Kauffman was chosen for this superior classroom teaching, program development and counseling. Kauffman lives in CHARLOTTESVILLE. Camerone Wells of FOREST received the Dr. Howard W. Allen Award presented to an African-American school teacher enrolled in a master's or doctoral program. Wendy Beckenstein of CHARLOTTESVILLE received the Dr. Susan Bjork O'Brien Memorial Award, which supports students pursuing careers in early childhood education. Sherly Cohen of CHARLOTTESVILLE received the Walter Eugene Campbell Award presented to a student who shows leadership in instruction and administration education. Bennett G. Boggs of CHARLOTTESVILLE received the Annette Gibbs Research Award presented to an outstanding student in the Center for the Study of Higher Education at the Curry School. Susanne M. DeFalco of CHARLOTTESVILLE received the Brenda Holliday Loyd Award, which supports educational and evaluation research. ElizaBeth McCay Ritchie White of CHARLOTTESVILLE received the William H. Seawell Memorial Award given to an outstanding student studying administration and supervision education. Elizabeth Hennessey of CHARLOTTESVILLE was awarded the W. W. Whitlock Award to provide support to a student in the teacher-preparation program who is planning to teach in Virginia. Aashish Contractor of CHARLOTTESVILLE received the Alice Becker Hinchcliffe Williams Award given to a student studying health education/health promotion. Ottilie F. Austin of CHARLOTTESVILLE received the George C. Graham Scholarship awarded annually to an outstanding graduate student in the McGuffey Reading Program in the Curry School. Ann Fajardo of CHARLOTTESVILLE received the Joan Larie Bell Scholarship. The award is given to a master's degree student who exhibits qualities of a great teacher including leadership, enthusiasm and the pursuit of excellence in the educational process. Lauren Green of CHARLOTTESVILLE received the Robert P. and Anne W. Buford Endowed Scholarship to provide scholarship assistance for a student in a five-year educational program. Katherine Amy Cummings of CHARLOTTESVILLE received the Curry School of Education Scholarship that supports the work of an outstanding graduate student. Suzanne Shreves of CHARLOTTESVILLE received the first annual Ruth Akin Scholarship. The scholarship is presented to an outstanding student in the five-year teacher preparation program. Jennifer J. White of CHARLOTTESVILLE was awarded the Johnnie E. Merritt Graduate Fellowship. The award supports a doctoral student in the Center for the Study of Higher Education. Tamara Josaitis of CHARLOTTESVILLE received the Outstanding Master of Teaching Award. Pamela Moran of KESWICK received the Mary Alice Gunter Award given to a doctoral student pursuing an advanced degree while holding a full-time position in a public school system. The award honors an outstanding student and educator who provides community service and leadership. Diane Jackson Schnoor of CROZET received the Bernard W. Busse Award presented to an outstanding student in the teacher-education program. Monica Parson of SCOTTSVILLE received the Nathan E. Johnson Memorial Scholarship. Established in memory of the first African-American faculty member at U.Va., the scholarship perpetuates the impact of Johnson's career in the Curry School. Adrienne Johnstone-Taylor of FREE UNION received the Odelia Moore Scholarship that supports an outstanding student in teaching education. Kevin Kotsko of FARMVILLE received the Outstanding Master of Education Award. Joncie Albright of GOOCHLAND received the Homer Humphreys Award given annually to an outstanding undergraduate in teacher education. Katherine Osborne Foreman of PALMYRA received the Richard A. Meade Award given annually to a graduate student pursuing English education. A. Renee Staton of STAUNTON received the William H. Van Hoose Memorial Award given annually to an outstanding student pursuing counselor education. Courtney Brown of BLACKSBURG received the first annual Mary Catherine Ellwein Award presented to a doctoral student in educational research and evaluation. Paige Goodpasture of RICHMOND received the Paul B. Walter Masters of Education Student Award presented to an outstanding master's degree student. Cheryl Henig of RICHMOND received the first annual Frank E. Flora Scholarship given to an outstanding student studying school leadership. Ellen Reynolds of ABINGDON received the Gladys M. Graham Scholarship given annually to a student in the top quarter of the class in the five-year teacher-education program. Christy Burcham of GALAX received the W. Thomas and Jacqueline J. Rice Scholarship to benefit Virginia students who intend to teach in the Commonwealth. Leri Thomas of WOLFTOWN received the Miriam and Edward E. Knight Scholarship that supports a graduate of Mary Washington College who pursues graduate studies at the Curry School. Jennifer Elizabeth Annis Knight of HERNDON received the first annual A. L. Bennett Endowed Scholarship presented to a student from Virginia or Mississippi pursuing education in the Curry School. Barry Martin Dorsey of RIO GRANDE, OH received the Distinguished Alumnus Award given to a graduate whose contributions in the field of education have earned both state and national recognition. Margaret P. Weiss of WILLIAMSBURG was awarded the first Eli M. Bower Fellowship. The award supports a student studying emotional and behavioral disorders. Brian Plautz of BATAVIA, IL received the Jessie C. Carpenter Award given annually to a graduate student who has contributed outstanding service to the Curry School. Whitney Casey of TAMPA, FL received the David F. Cooke Award presented annually to a student-athlete who exemplifies outstanding qualities in athletics, academics and leadership both in and out of the classroom. Samantha Lee Allen of NICEVILLE, FL received the William C. Lowry Scholarship that supports a teacher-education student planning to teach mathematics. Lauren O'Neill of BROOKLYN, NY received the Inge Family Scholarship that supports an out-of-state student pursuing teacher education. Julianna Lynn Pavlakovic of LATROBE, PA received the Estelle B. Seward Scholarship. The annual award provides fellowship assistance to an outstanding mathematics student. Erika Shimahara of PRINCETON JUNCTION, NJ received the Hunter Page Taylor Memorial Scholarship. The award supports a student in the top quarter of the class in the Curry School's five-year teacher-education program who is prepared to teach a foreign language. Elizabeth Ann Cottone of LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ received the John B. and Florence S. May Fellowship presented to a student studying and conducting research in learning disabilities. Susan Thacker-Gwaltney of DECATUR, GA received the Jean R. Butcher Fellowship to support a student pursing an education in reading. Jennifer Boucek of ST. PETERSBURG, FL received the Outstanding Bachelor of Science in Education Award. The Outstanding Doctoral Student Award went to Enrico Pedro of SOUTH AFRICA.
