SHAPING VIRGINIA'S EDUCATION KEY PLAYERS GATHER TO DISCUSS, DEBATE WHAT FUTURE HOLDS CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va., June 28 -- The public is invited to hear -- and question -- top education policymakers addressing the future of education in Virginia during a July 8-9 institute at the University of Virginia. During the two-day policy institute, participants will discuss the future of both K-12 and higher education. Sponsored by the Department of Leadership, Foundations and Policy in U.Va.'s Curry School of Education, the program will be held in Ruffner Hall Auditorium. Lt. Gov. Donald S. Beyer Jr. will be the keynote speaker at a 12:30 p.m. lunch on Tuesday, July 8. He will speak on "The Future of Education in Virginia." (The lunch will be held in Alumni Hall, with parking available across the street in the garage.) Tuesday, July 8, 9:15-10:45 a.m. On Tuesday, July 8, Del. William "Ted" Bennett, Jr., chair, Commission on the Future of Public Education and Cheri James, president, Virginia Education Association, will be among the panelists who will discuss the future of K-12 education. Joining them in the session, to be held from 9:15 to 10:45 a.m., will be William C. Bosher Jr., superintendent, Chesterfield County Schools, and Stewart D. Roberson, superintendent, Hanover County Schools. 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Senator John H. Chichester, head, Future of Higher Education Commission, will moderate a panel on the future of higher education. Appearing on the panel, to run from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on July 8, will be Elizabeth McClanahan, chair, State Council of Higher Education for Virginia; Arnold R. Oliver, chancellor, Virginia Community College System; James W. Dyke Jr., former Virginia Secretary of Education; and David W. Breneman, Curry School dean. July 9, 9-10:30 a.m. A 9-10:30 a.m. panel on July 9 will also examine the future of K-12 education. On that panel will be Del. J. Paul Councill Jr., Franklin city; Richard T. LaPointe, Virginia State Superintendent of Public Instruction; Beverly Sgro, Virginia Secretary of Education; and Frank E. Barham, executive director, Virginia School Boards Association. 10:45 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. The second session on higher education, which will run from 10:45 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on July 9, will include Brenda Edwards, senior research associate and legislative services contact; Robert M. O'Neil, director, Thomas Jefferson Center for the Protection of Free Expression; and Michael Mallory, executive director, Ron Brown Scholar Program. Sen. Emily Couric will moderate both panels on the future of K-12 education. "The public will be able to raise questions and discuss the defining education issues in Virginia with key policymakers," said Harold Burbach, professor and chair, Department of Leadership, Foundations and Policy.
