RICHMOND LAWYER TO HEAD U.VA. NURSING BOARD CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA., June 20 --James C. Roberts of the Richmond law firm May & Valentine was recently named chair of the University of Virginia School of Nursing Advisory Board. Roberts has helped to raise more than $2 million for the school through gifts and grants from foundations and corporations. His daughter earned both baccalaureate and masters in nursing degrees from U.Va. "Jim is a natural to assume the chairmanship. He was a charter member of the board and also serves as a consultant to our Campaign Steering Committee," said Jeanette Lancaster, dean and Sadie Heath Cabaniss Professor of Nursing. "Jim believes in the work of nurses and in the School of Nursing. He is willing to devote his time and immeasurable knowledge and influence to help us." A graduate of Hampden-Sydney College and the University of Richmond law school, Roberts is on the Board of Visitors of the Virginia Military Institute and serves as trustee of the Theresa A. Thomas Memorial Foundation. The Richmond-based foundation has funded scholarships for undergraduate nursing and medical school students, and a feasibility study for home health care in central Virginia, as well as U.Va. hospital's Gamma knife facility. The Thomas Foundation has also given $2 million to the schools of Medicine and Nursing for scholarships, professorships and a nursing Intensive Care Simulation Lab. Roberts specializes in civil litigation, criminal defense, domestic relations and lobbying and related work with the State Corporation Commission.
